Sometimes, we can’t control what happens to us, but we can control how we respond to life’s challenges. That’s exactly the approach Juan took after a series of surgeries to remove benign brain tumors left his memory and hearing so impaired that he was unable to continue working in his chosen field of graphic design.
For years after his surgeries, Juan worked hard to rebuild a competitive professional skillset as a volunteer and later as an intern at a Boston public relations firm. But this work required frequent communication with colleagues and clients, and relied heavily on executive memory function – which became an extreme challenge for Juan due to his condition.
But Juan was driven to succeed, and Advocates was ready to partner with him to find a new vocational solution to match his goals, skills, and condition. According to Michelle Demore-Taber, clinical director of Brain Injury Services for Advocates, "The degree of Juan's hearing loss, along with the fact that English is his second language, set him on a challenging path. Yet he has exhibited a remarkable determination to work competitively, to live independently, and to be a contributing member of society."
By honing in on Juan’s strengths and character attributes, Advocates staff searched for a position to provide the right combination of independence, social interaction, and flexibility. For the last several years, Juan has seen success reconditioning cars and transporting customers for a rental car agency in Boston’s Government Center. Michelle has continued to provide ongoing support to Juan through the years.
Of his experience with Advocates, Juan says it’s been very rewarding and positive. “If I didn't have them as a resource, I don't know if I would still have all that I have now."
